Colonial Volunteer Opportunities

Without the support of our volunteers, Colonial could not offer the levels of service we do in the community. The work of our over 400 volunteers enables us to continue to offer enrichment, support and outstanding programs.  Without the support of our volunteers, Colonial could not offer the encouragement to Greater Hamilton area adults wanting to maintain their independent lifestyles.

We are always seeking to expand our network of volunteers, and options and hours for those who want to contribute are very flexible – opportunities usually exist for weekend, weekday, morning, noon and night. We encourage volunteers of all ages – from middle school to older adults – in a variety of areas:

School Volunteers
Volunteers with Colonial Schools serve in a number of capacities. They help with fund-raisers, assist children with computer learning, help residents who wish to visit classrooms, and work in the library.

Activity Assistants for Independent/Assisted Living and Healthcare Residents
These volunteers assist with resident social events, trips, outings and parties.  They may help with internal activities such as happy hours and bingos.   Resident volunteering can also include one-on-one visits, reading, mending and sewing, or personal shopping for residents.

Physician Escorts
We are always in need of individuals who will accompany residents to their physicians’ offices or to the hospital for testing. Volunteers will not need to transport residents, simply serve as companions to ease tension and facilitate appointments.

Special Mailings
Some volunteers help with labeling and stuffing envelopes and any other tasks involved with large bulk mailings. This group meets as needed several times a year.

Meals-on-Wheels
Volunteers are always needed to deliver hot, nutritious meals to older adults in the Hamilton community. For this program in particular, the ideal volunteer is friendly, compassionate and willing to spend a short amount of extra time talking with each recipient, helping to make the delivery a special visit instead of strictly a meal drop-off.  Meals are delivered between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and routes last one to two hours.

Guild Members

The Westover and Berkeley Square Service Guilds are committed to providing a variety of resources and services to residents of Colonial's campuses. The guilds are primarily made up of community members who wish to enhance life for residents and they are responsible, among other things, for all of the internal holiday decorating at Berkeley Square and Westover.

Planters, Gardeners and Maintenance

Many volunteers work to beautify the grounds of Berkeley Square and Westover. Volunteers help with seasonal planting, greenhouse maintenance, and work with our maintenance staff to help maintain the landscaping and other areas of the buildings.

Clothing Alteration and Repairs

Volunteers lend their sewing talents to help alter and repair clothing for residents.

Marketing and Clerical

Residents and community members volunteer to assist with a variety of clerical tasks, including the maintenance of the libraries at both campuses. The also assist our marketing staff with open houses at Berkeley Square and Westover.

Spiritual Instruction and Services

Spiritual leaders of local churches are needed to provide ministry to residents of Westover and Berkeley Square, just one service per month is a great help. In addition, volunteers lead Bible studies and various spiritual pursuits.

The Bever Wellness Center

Wellness volunteers enjoy Friday morning "Walkabout" where they push wheelchair bound residents through Westover's campus. Volunteers also participate in Wellness activities, including the annual Health & Wellness Expo, where they help with registration, and a variety of other activities.

Gift Shop

Volunteers are responsible for operating the gift shops at Berkeley Square and Westover. They determine all puchasing and coordinate the staffing as well.
